Current Drivability Status:

Car Stats:
Color: Green, Brown, Greenish Brown, Brownish Green, nobody's really sure
Year: 1972
Make: Chevrolet
Model: Impala Custom

When I bought the car: November, 1988
How many miles it had when I got it: 75,000
When the car first got its very own webpage: November, 1995
Original price I paid for the car: $650
Number of times the car has been washed since 1995: Seven

Miles on the original engine: 380,000 (only an estimate since the odometer's been broken for 12 years)

Fuel Economy: 9 mi/gal city, 10 mi/gal highway
Tires: Rubber, round, worn.
Radiator: Replaced but slowly deteriorating
Body: Squeaky, all original body parts (those which are still there and haven't already fallen off)
Engine: All original internal engine components (except timing chain). Engine still perky!
Shocks: Replaced.
Drive shaft: U-joints welded in place to prevent them from falling out. This model of Impala has what they call a non-rebuildable drive shaft. They say it's never supposed to need overhaul. Well I did it! Unfortunately, the next time I have u-joint trouble down there, I must buy a whole new drive shaft. (several year time lapse) Ok, it happened. Had to get another junk yard drive shaft and have it rebuilt. Now it's ready set for another 100,000 miles!
Headlights: One of the four is smashed, but who cares...it's only the high beam! Update: both high beams are smashed. And sometimes I need to get out of the car and smack one of the regular headlights to make it turn on!
Windows: Glass with manual hand crank. Actually, one of them consists of a pair of vice grips clamped onto the little spindle thing. (update: vice grips replaced with handle!)
Door locks: Operational (except the window won't roll up all the way, so you can reach your hand in and unlock it! Plus, I don't think I have the key!) Update: window somewhat fixed!
Trunk lock: Fixed!
Horn: One octave higher than the original horn, when I use it, people think that it's the little foreign car next to me that's beeping!
Carb: Replaced (at least 8 times since I've had the car)
Brakes: Operational, slight squeak...since has become a big squeak! Update: I really need new rotors now, my brake pads haven't worn at all in about 3 years because the rotors are so smooth! Update: Rotors replaced, along with the calipers, wheel cylinders, master cylinder, and proportioning valve.
Belts: Need replacing...haven't done it in over 6 years! I might do it real soon. Stay tuned...    Update: Belts replaced. Good for another 5 or 10 years.
Hoses: Need replacing. Update: Replaced
Starter: Replaced (at least 8 times since I've had the car)
Water pump: Replaced about 5 times.
Alternator: Replaced 02-16-02 previous alternator lasted 30 years and 270,000 miles!
Points: Replaced approx. 30 times Update: Upgraded to HEI. No need to mess with points anymore!
Plugs: Replaced!
Exhaust: Noisy leaks repaired! I wrapped a tin can around it and put two clamps on it! Thanks for the tip Terry, even if you were just joking! Update: Whole exhaust system repaired!!
Power steering pump: Leak finally repaired after years of leaking! Cost $13 for hose. 30 minutes labor performed by yours truly. This appears to be what caused the center link to go bad again. Apparently it was continually soaking the joint where it meets the pitman arm. I'm glad it's fixed!
Emission Devices: None required, none installed
Fuel: Any flammable liquid!
Oil: Needs changing...burns a little
Motor mount: Replaced 3 times.
Oil leaks: Leaking from various spots, but not gushing yet. Tranny is starting to leak a few drops per day. Update: Now leaking about 94 drops per day.
Rear view mirror: Fell off 6 years ago. It's been sitting under my seat ever since! Update: Mirror is back on the windshield.

Advantages of owning Dave's Vintage 1972 Chevy Impalas
1. It's paid for!
2. You get a big Bonus on your insurance bill
3. Registration is dirt cheap
4. Do your own repair, save lots of labor fees
5. Parts are a steal compared to new car & foreign car parts
6. Easy to spot in the parking lot
7. Other cars get out of it's way when they see, hear, feel or smell it coming
8. It's paid for!
9. Nobody will steal it...well...when they do, they realize they made a mistake and they quickly abandon it!
10. It's never left me stranded for too long
11. If it gets a scratch or dent, who cares...I don't have to yell and cry about it
12. You don't have to wash it. It looks the same either way
13. It holds up pretty good in case someone plows into it
14. It's the latest in anti-theft devices...the entire car is an anti-theft device!
15. It doesn't go fast enough to get pulled over for speeding
16. Successfully delivered 3000-4000 Domino's Pizzas
17. Smooth ride
18. Ample trunk space
19, If I tell my boss I can't come in to work because I can't get the car started, he believes me!
20. Car not likely to overturn in an accident (drive shaft malfunctions excluded)
21. It gets me where I'm going!

Disadvantages of owning Dave's Vintage 1972 Chevy Impalas
1. Fuel Cost
2. Fumes (actually, it pollutes less than most cars right now, so forget this one)
3. Decibels (I repaired the exhaust, so forget this one too)
4. Doesn't accelerate quite like the '72 Chevelle SS (who needs it? I live in the big city. Anyone who owns a sports car in a city where there's gridlock must have a screw loose!!!)
5. No anti-lock brakes or air bags (my motto: "Drive nice and you won't crash!" So who needs an air bag or anti-lock brakes?)
6. Parts fall off sometimes (strike this one too, as there has never been a critical part that fell off...yet)
7. People think I've abandoned it, even when I only left it for a minute! (It hasn't been hauled away yet, so I guess we don't need to count this as a disadvantage)

As you can see, the advantages greatly outweigh the disadvantages. Please e-mail me if you think there's a good reason I shouldn't continue to save between $2,000 and $20,000 per year by driving my dream boats!!!!
